Years of birth: unknown. A boy who served Shunkan, who appears in volume 3 of The Tale of the Heike. He eventually traveled to the island in pursuit of Shunkan, who was exiled to Kikaigashima in 1177 for participating in the Shishigatani Incident, a plot to overthrow the Taira clan. He is said to have been present at Shunkan's final moments, had his remains placed in the inner sanctuary of Mount Koya, and then became a monk and traveled around the country to mourn his master's soul. Ariou played the role of dispelling Shunkan's delusions and saving him from the suffering of hell, but since Kunio Yanagita published his theory that a narrator calling himself Ariou traveled around the country telling the tale of Shunkan's tragedy, and that this was absorbed into the Tale of the Genpei War, this has given rise to controversy over issues such as the transmission of the tale, the management of the tale, and the creation of The Tale of the Heike. <References> Kunio Yanagita, "Monogatari to Naritamono" (Yoko Sakurai) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
