New Red Sandstone

Japanese: 新赤色砂岩 - しんせきしょくさがん
New Red Sandstone
The Triassic system was deposited inside the mountains of Central Europe during the Variscan orogeny. It is mainly composed of continental deposits characterized by red sandstone and pebble rocks formed in an arid climate, and is sandwiched between shallow marine deposits. It is called the New Red Sandstone in contrast to the Old Red Sandstone from the Devonian Caledonian orogeny. In a broad sense, it is also used to refer to similar deposits from the same period in various places.
