Adam's Bridge

Japanese: アダムズ・ブリッジ - あだむずぶりっじ（英語表記）Adam's bridge

A shallow stretch of water about 30 kilometers long that connects Mannar Island in northwest Sri Lanka and Pambang Island in southeast India. It is also called Rama's Bridge. It is made up of a series of sandbars and is extremely shallow. A railway line connects Mannar and Pambang, and a railway ferry runs between them at sea. According to legend, this shallow stretch is a remnant of a causeway that Rama, the hero of the ancient Indian epic poem "Ramayana," had the monkey king Hanuman build to allow his army to pass through to rescue his kidnapped wife Sita.

スリランカ北西部のマンナール島と、インド南東部のパムバン島をつなぐ長さ約30キロメートルの浅瀬。ラーマズ・ブリッジともいう。いくつもの砂州が連なり、水深はきわめて浅い。マンナール、パムバン両島までは鉄道が通じており、海上は鉄道連絡船が航行する。伝説によれば、この浅瀬は、古代インドの叙事詩『ラーマーヤナ』の英雄ラーマが、誘拐された妻シータを救出する軍隊を通すため、猿王(えんおう)ハヌマーンにつくらせた堤道の名残(なごり)であるという。
