〘Noun〙 (formerly "mouzo")① (━suru) Buddhist term. To mistakenly believe that something that is not true is true due to a trapped mind. Also, such a mistaken thought. Evil thoughts. *Suga Kagoshu (c. 903), Autumn evening, titled Shiragiku, "With my eyes wide open, I see some delusions, Wang Hong, who is drunk and has become a convenient resident." [Engaku Sutra]② (━suru) To wildly imagine something that cannot exist. To indulge in lewd thoughts. Also, such imagination. Boso. [Nippo Jisho (1603-04)] *A Certain Woman (1919), Arishima Takeo, 27, "I had various delusions about the relationship between Kurachi and his wife."③ A state in which one is convinced that something unreasonable is true even when there is no particular basis for it, and refuses to accept it even if it is proven wrong. It appears as a symptom of various mental illnesses.

Bousou bausau [delusion]

〘 noun 〙 To imagine something without any basis. It's true. ※Dreams of the Future of Living in the Mainland (1886) by Shoyo Tsubouchi, vol. 12 "When I listen to you, there are so many delusions that are sometimes laughable ."

〘名〙 根拠のないことを、とりとめもなく想像すること。もうそう。※内地雑居未来之夢(1886)〈坪内逍遙〉一二「聞いてゐると。時々笑ふべき妄想(ボウサウ)が多いテ」
