A marine fish of the Sciaenidae family in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is found in the East China Sea, from central Honshu southward. It is called Kowaishimochi in Mitani, Aichi Prefecture, Nube in Kagoshima and Nagasaki, and Haguchi in Uwajima. It is often called Ishimochi along with other species in this family, due to the large otoliths in its inner ear. In many regions, it is called Guchi along with other species in this family, due to its habit of vibrating its swim bladder to make a gurgling sound. The back of the body is a silvery light bluish-gray, and the abdomen is pale. There are also rows of brown dots running along the rows of scales on the body except for the abdomen.
