Menpa people (English spelling)

Japanese: メンパ族(門巴族) - メンパぞく（英語表記）Mén bā zú

An ethnic minority living in the border area between China's Tibet (Xizang) Autonomous Region and India. The population on the Chinese side is about 7,500 (1990). "Mengpa" was originally the name given to them by the Tibetan people, but it has now become their self-name. It means "people from the main area of residence." The Mengpa language belongs to the Tibetan-Burman language family, and there are great differences in dialect depending on the area of residence. The Mengpa people have been the focus of particular attention since the Sino-Indian conflict in 1962. They live in high mountain valleys, and their main occupation is agriculture, but they also engage in livestock farming and hunting.
