A fish of the family Osmeridae. Also known as Capelin. Found in the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Its body shape and size are similar to that of the shishamo fish, but it can be distinguished by its smaller scales and teeth. It spawns in March and April in Northern Europe and in June and July in North America. It is caught in large numbers in Norway, Canada, Russia, and other countries. It is imported to Japan as frozen shishamo. Most of the shishamo sold cheaply at supermarkets and izakayas are of this species. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
