Capelin

A fish of the family Osmeridae. Also known as Capelin. Found in the northern Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Its body shape and size are similar to that of the shishamo fish, but it can be distinguished by its smaller scales and teeth. It spawns in March and April in Northern Europe and in June and July in North America. It is caught in large numbers in Norway, Canada, Russia, and other countries. It is imported to Japan as frozen shishamo. Most of the shishamo sold cheaply at supermarkets and izakayas are of this species.

キュウリウオ科の魚。別名カラフトシシャモ。太平洋および大西洋の北部に分布。体型，大きさはシシャモによく似るが，うろこや歯が小さいことで識別できる。北ヨーロッパでは３〜４月，北米では６〜７月に産卵。ノルウェーやカナダ，ロシアなどで大量に捕獲される。日本に冷凍シシャモとして輸入。スーパーや居酒屋等で安く売られているシシャモはたいてい，この種である。
