975‐1018 German clergyman and chronicler. Also called Dietmar. Born into the distinguished Walbeck family whose main estate was in Helmstedt, he was raised in the cathedrals of Quedlinburg and Magdeburg. He received one of the best educations of his time, becoming a canon there around 1000, ordained a priest four years later, and appointed Bishop of Merseburg in 1009. His chronicles are a vivid and rich testimony of the Saxon dynasty's policy towards the Slavs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
