German clergyman and chronicler. Also called Dietmar. Born into the distinguished Walbeck family whose main estate was in Helmstedt, he was raised in the cathedrals of Quedlinburg and Magdeburg. He received one of the best educations of his time, becoming a canon there around 1000, ordained a priest four years later, and appointed Bishop of Merseburg in 1009. His chronicles are a vivid and rich testimony of the Saxon dynasty's policy towards the Slavs.

ドイツの聖職者，年代記作家。ディートマールDietmarともいう。ヘルムシュテットに中心所領をもつ名門ワルベック伯家に生まれ，幼年時代はクウェードリンブルクの，長じてはマクデブルクの司教座聖堂で養育された。特に後者では当代一流の教育を受け，1000年ころそこの聖堂参事会員となり，4年後は司祭に叙階され，09年にはメルゼブルク司教に任ぜられた。彼の筆になる《年代記》はザクセン王朝の対スラブ政策についてのいきいきとした豊かな証言となっている。
