〘Noun〙 ("sama" is a suffix) A respectful term for the wife of a person of high rank, such as the concubine of a nobleman or the legal wife of a feudal lord. Later it was also used for the wives of upper-class samurai or wealthy merchants, and is now widely used in general. It is also a respectful term used by servants to address their mistresses.
