Also called "black film" or "black movie," which translates to "black movie" in Japanese, it has a long history behind it. Black people first appeared in American films in the first film adaptation of Mrs. Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1903), a 12-minute film directed by Edwin S. Porter, in which Tom was played by a white actor with his face painted black. In the fourth film adaptation of the same novel (1914, directed by W. R. Daly), black stage actor Sam Lucas played Tom for the first time, but white actors continued to paint their faces black and play black characters thereafter.
