Pseudo-scale

Japanese: 擬階奏 - ぎかいのそう
Pseudo-scale
One of the procedures for bestowing ranks to lower-ranking government officials under the Ritsuryo system. The ceremony is held on April 7 every year. Those who are to be bestowed ranks of sixth rank or lower among the various government officials are evaluated for their performance over the course of a year (from August 1 to the end of July the following year), and after a procession on February 11 of the following year, the ranks of the selected officials (those who are recognized as eligible for the rank) are determined, and on April 7, a list of those ranked eighth rank or higher (compared to imperial conferment for those ranked fifth rank or higher, and judicial conferment for those ranked eighth rank or lower, is called a soju). This is called a gishisou. According to a Heian period ritual book, on that day, the minister leads the nobles to Shishinden and presents to the emperor a petition for the gishis based on the gishisou submitted in advance by the Ministry of Ceremonies and the Ministry of War to the Dajokan, and then the Ministry of Ceremonies and the Ministry of War each presents a tanzaku (a short note of the selection) that they have written for the procession.
