Umitanago (sea bream) - surfperch

A marine fish belonging to the family Umitanidae in the order Perciformes of the class Osteichthyes. Although it is simply called tanago, it is distantly related to the freshwater tanagos in the order Cypriniformes. It is found along the coasts of Japan from southern Hokkaido southward and the southern Korean peninsula. It reaches a total length of about 25 cm, with an ovoid body that is often laterally compressed. It is ovoviviparous, and females give birth to about 20-30 juveniles of about 6 cm in early summer. Males can be distinguished from females by the significantly longer soft rays at the rear of their anal fin. It lives in schools in rocky areas and in seaweed beds in inland bays, and prefers to eat small shellfish and crustaceans. It is closely related to the blue-colored ... The latter has a dark brown body color, is a northern fish that lives in deeper waters than the sea bitterling, and is delicious when grilled with salt.

fishing

This fish is targeted for fishing from rocky shores and breakwaters, and unlike big game fishing, it can be enjoyed on rocky shores with good footing. The fishing season varies depending on the region, but it is generally from winter to spring. Float fishing is the norm, with a shimori rig with four or five evenly spaced floats attached, and fishing is aimed at rocky trenches and areas with lots of seaweed. In areas with calm waves and good tidal flow, small standing floats are also good. As they tend to swim in schools, bait is needed to attract them, which is made by mixing minced shrimp or sardines with seawater and casting small amounts to float with the tide. Bait attached to the hook includes sand lance, earthworms, blue worms, large shrimp, and live shrimp. The secret to a good catch is to cast more bait immediately after catching one fish to avoid scattering the school of fish. The bait must be small to be attached to the hook, otherwise it will not hook well.
