…He studied at Oxford and became dean of the Temple Church in London in 1585. In his Treatise on Ecclesiastical Politics (1594), which arose from a dispute with the Puritan Walter Travers, he criticized the Puritan's bibliophilia and argued that the Church of England was based on the Bible and the traditions of the early church, not on the law of God or the law of reason. His idea of the covenant later influenced Locke, and his excellent writings are considered masterpieces of 16th century English literature. …
