Korean poet and essayist. Born in Busan. Moved to Japan at the age of 13 and studied hard. Recognized by Kitahara Hakushu, he published Chosen Minyoshu (Collection of Korean Folk Songs) (Taibunkan) in 1929, and began collecting and translating Korean orally transmitted children's songs and folk songs, and introducing modern poetry. With the efforts of Tsuchida Kyoson, he published Onmon Chosen Kouden Minyoshu (Collection of Korean Orally Translated Folk Songs) (Daiichi Shobo) in 1933, and in the same year, abridged translations of this book based on the lyric numbers, Chosen Doyosen (Selection of Korean Children's Songs) and Chosen Minyosen (Selection of Korean Folk Songs), were added to the Iwanami Bunko collection. In 1940, he published a collection of translated poems, Milky Clouds (Kawade Shobo). He also used the name Tetsujinbei from 1942 to 1943. He returned to Japan in February 1945. In 1952, while on his way to the Venice International Artists Congress, he stopped in Japan and made a remark that prevented him from returning home, and he remained in Japan. After returning to Japan in 1965, he translated the "Selections of Modern Korean Literature" (5 volumes), the "Complete Works of Korean Art" (15 volumes), and compiled and published the "Korean-Japanese Dictionary" and the "Selected Essays of Kim So-un" (5 volumes). He dedicated his life to informing the Japanese people of the beauty of Korean culture and traditions.
