Md. Atomic number 101. Electron configuration [Rn]5f 13 7s 2. The ninth actinide element in the periodic table. Named after DI Mendeleev, the author of the periodic law. In 1955, GT Seaborg, A. Ghiorso, and others at the University of California, Berkeley, created a nuclide with mass number 256 and a half-life of 77 min by bombardment of 253 Es with alpha particles from a 60 in cyclotron. It was subsequently confirmed by ion exchange-elution chromatography of only 17 atoms that it has properties similar to thulium. First ionization energy 650 kJ mol -1 (6.74 eV). Oxidation numbers 1 to 3. Currently, there are 18 known isotopic nuclides in the range 245 to 262. The alpha-decay nuclide with mass number 258 is the longest-lived, with a half-life of 51.5 d.
