Hichiriki - Hichiriki

Japanese: 篳篥∥觱篥 - ひちりき
Hichiriki - Hichiriki
A type of wind instrument found in China, Korea, and Japan. It is fitted with a vibrating body called a tongue (which functions as a double reed) and is held in the mouth and blown. It is also written as 'bishitsu', 'biriki', 'riki', etc., and is sometimes abbreviated as 'kakan'. In ancient times it was also called 'kakan', 'kan', or 'gakan'.
[China]
In modern China, instruments called pipes or guanzi are used, and the hichiriki is considered an ancient instrument. The hichiriki was introduced to China during the Northern and Southern Dynasties as an instrument of the Hu people of the Western Regions, and was used in court music as an instrument playing the main melodies during the Sui and Tang dynasties. During the Song dynasty, it became an increasingly important instrument in the court and in the newly developed dramatic music.
