A trademark name for a liqueur produced by the French company Benedictine. It is made by steeping 27 kinds of herbs in high-quality brandy or co-distilling them to extract the ingredients. It has an alcohol content of 43%. ◇It was invented in 1510 by Bernardo Vincelli at the Benedictine monastery in Fécamp, Normandy, northwestern France. The label bears the initials "DOM," which are the Latin words for "Deo Optimo Maximo," a prayer used at the monastery and means "to the Most High God." It is also called "Benedictine DOM" or "Dom" for short. "Benedictine" generally refers to Benedictine DOM, but there is also a blend of this with brandy, called "Benedictine DOM B&B," which is the abbreviation of the two.
