A strait between the UK and France. Its French name is the Strait of Calais. Its deepest point is 59 meters. Its width at its shortest point (between Dover and Calais) is 34 kilometers. It connects the English Channel (Atlantic side) and the North Sea, where the tides of both meet. There are the ports of Dover and Folkestone on the UK side, and Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer on the French side, and there are regular ships running between Dover and Calais, and between Folkestone and Boulogne-sur-Mer. The former is the main route, and takes about an hour by hovercraft. The Channel Tunnel, which connects Folkestone and Coqueil near Calais, opened in May 1994.
