Azuma Nishikie

Japanese: 吾妻錦絵 - あづまにしきえ
Azuma Nishikie

...A general term for multi-colored ukiyo-e woodblock prints. In 1765 (Meiwa 2), a picture calendar competition became popular among Edo hobbyists who enjoyed haiku poetry. The ukiyo-e artist Suzuki Harunobu (1725-70) participated in this competition, and in collaboration with carvers and printers, developed a technique that he named "Azuma Nishiki-e" and commercialized. By aligning the marks engraved on the woodblock, many colors were precisely printed, creating a gorgeous and beautiful coloring like brocade.
