Tsuruzo Ishii

Sculptor, Western-style painter, and printmaker. Born in Tokyo as the third son of the painter Ishii Teiko. His eldest brother was the Western-style painter Ishii Hakutei. In 1910 (Meiji 43), he graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts' sculptors' course, and the following year received a commendation at the 5th Bunten exhibition. In 1914 (Taisho 3), he entered the sculpture department of the Japan Art Academy, and in 1916, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy. He played a leading role in the Inten exhibition sculpture department with his robust skeletal sculptures, which were created through deep contemplation of nature. He was also active in oil painting, watercolors, and woodblock printing, and became a member of the Shunyo-kai and the president of the Japan Print Association. He served as a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1944 to 1959 (Showa 19-34), and became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1975. His representative works include the sculptures "Portrait of Mother Koki," "Shunkan," and "Portrait of Professor Toson." He is also known for his illustrations for newspaper novels such as "Daibosatsu Toge" and "Miyamoto Musashi."

彫刻家、洋画家、版画家。画家石井鼎湖(ていこ)の三男として東京に生まれる。洋画家石井柏亭(はくてい)は長兄。1910年（明治43）東京美術学校彫刻家選科卒業、翌年第5回文展で褒状、14年（大正3）日本美術院彫刻部に入り、16年日本美術院同人となった。深い自然観照による堅牢(けんろう)な骨格の彫刻で院展彫刻部に指導的役割を果たした。油絵、水彩、木版画でも活躍し、春陽会会員、日本版画協会会長となった。44～59年（昭和19～34）東京芸術大学教授を務め、50年に日本芸術院会員となる。代表作に彫刻『母古稀(こき)像』『俊寛』『藤村先生像』など。また、『大菩薩(だいぼさつ)峠』『宮本武蔵(むさし)』など新聞小説の挿絵でも知られている。
