Needle Memorial Service - Harikuyo

Japanese:
Needle Memorial Service - Harikuyo

An event to take a break from needlework and to offer prayers for old needles. Widely distributed throughout the country, it is customary to take a break from sewing to avoid using needles, and to stick broken and old needles from the year into tofu, konnyaku, mochi, etc. and take them to a nearby shrine or temple (especially one related to Awashima Shrine) to be purified or offered prayers, or to let them flow into a river. It is held on either or both of the so-called Koto Hachi (February 8th and December 8th). The original meaning and origin must be explored within the overall event of Koto Hachi, which is an austere day. It is said that the spread of this event to various places was either by Awashima Gannin of Awashima Shrine in Kada, Wakayama City, which has a connection with women, or that it became established as a prayer for improvement in sewing skills at sewing schools and other places from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. In Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures, there is a legend that on this day, a fish called "harisenbon" (a thousand needles) is blown ashore.
