A Japanese term for slash-and-burn farming, also known as nagihata, kirihatayama, and kirihata. The land is used as farmland after the forest is cut down, and is left fallow for a certain period of time when the soil loses its fertility. There is a theory that slash-and-burn farming is movable farmland cultivated by fire, and slash-and-burn farming is movable farmland not cultivated by fire, but in reality they are used synonymously. A distinction was made between inside-cut farming on tax-free land and outside-cut farming on taxable land. Slash-and-burn farming has been recorded in land survey books since the early modern period, and was an important form of land use in mountainous areas. It was practiced in the mountainous areas of Chugoku, Kyushu, and the Chubu region until around 1955.
