A small Charadriiformes bird of the Auklet family (illustration) with a uniquely shaped beak. It breeds on the coasts and islands around the Bering Sea, such as the Chukot Peninsula, Anadyr Bay, the Aleut Islands, and the Pribilof Islands, and migrates slightly south in winter. It is one of the few winter birds in Japan, and mainly migrates to the seas of northern Japan. Total length is about 23 cm. In summer plumage, the head and upper part of the body are gray-black, with white ornamental feathers under the eyes, the chest and belly are white, and there are gray-black spots on the chest and sides. The beak is thick and short, with a unique shape, crimson red, and has a brown appendage at the base.

特殊な形のくちばしをした小型のチドリ目ウミスズメ科の鳥（イラスト）。チュコート半島，アナディル湾，アレウト列島，プリビロフ諸島など，ベーリング海周辺の海岸や島で繁殖し，冬はやや南へ移動する。日本には数少ない冬鳥としておもに北日本の海上に渡来する。全長約23cm。夏羽では頭部と体の上面は灰黒色，眼の下から白色の飾羽が生じ，胸から腹は白くて胸側と脇には灰黒色の斑がある。くちばしは太くて短く，特殊な形をしており朱赤色，基部には褐色の付属物がある。
