1254‐96 Count of Holland (1256-96). Son of William II (William of Holland), who was elected rival king of Germany in 1247. He failed in his campaign against West Frisia (now the northern part of the province of Holland) in 1272, and provoked a peasant revolt in Kennemerland in 1274, but he skillfully appeased the rebels and thereafter gained the support of the citizens and peasants. He also expanded his territory eastward by suppressing Gijsbrecht, lord of Amstel, and Herman, lord of Woerden, who were rebelling against the Bishop of Utrecht, and succeeded in taking control of West Frisia in 1289.
