Count of Holland (1256-96). Son of William II (William of Holland), who was elected rival king of Germany in 1247. He failed in his campaign against West Frisia (now the northern part of the province of Holland) in 1272, and provoked a peasant revolt in Kennemerland in 1274, but he skillfully appeased the rebels and thereafter gained the support of the citizens and peasants. He also expanded his territory eastward by suppressing Gijsbrecht, lord of Amstel, and Herman, lord of Woerden, who were rebelling against the Bishop of Utrecht, and succeeded in taking control of West Frisia in 1289.

ホラント伯(1256‐96)。1247年にドイツの対抗国王に選ばれたウィレム2世(ウィルヘルム･フォン･ホラント)の子。1272年西フリースラント(現，ホラント州北部)遠征に失敗し，74年ケネメルラント農民の反乱を招いたが，反徒を巧みに慰撫して，以後はむしろ市民，農民層の支持を得た。またユトレヒト司教に反抗するアムステル領主ヘイスブレヒトGijsbrecht，ウルデン領主ヘルマンHermanを抑えて東方に領土を広げ，89年西フリースラントの制圧にも成功。
