Metate (English spelling)

Japanese: メタテ（英語表記）metate

A stone tool used to grind food. It has a flat, rectangular surface with three or one sloping leg. When it has three legs, one of them is longer. Food is ground by holding both ends of a stone club called a mano from the higher side of the metate and pushing it forward. The shape of the metate used today in Mexico and other places has changed little for the past 3,000 years. The main foods ground with a metate include corn, cacao, tomatoes, and chili peppers. When used for a long period of time, the surface of the metate becomes concave, and the mano also wears down, except for the two ends.

食物をすりつぶすための石製の道具。使用面は平らで長方形，3本または1本の脚がつき傾斜している。3脚の場合，1本が長い。メタテの高い側から，マノと呼ばれる石棒の両端を持って，前方へ押し出すように食物をすりつぶす。現在メキシコなどで使われている形状のメタテは，3000年ほど前からほとんど変化していない。メタテを使ってすりつぶすおもな食物には，トウモロコシ，カカオ，トマト，トウガラシなどがある。メタテは長期間使用することにより使用面は凹状をなし，マノもまた両端を残してすりへる。
