A general term for compounds containing the siloxane bond Si-O-Si. Depending on the number of silicon atoms, they are named disiloxane, trisiloxane, etc. Polymers of the type [ RnSiO (4- n )/2 ] m (R is an alkyl or aryl group) are called silicones. They are obtained by hydrolysis of organic (organo)halogenosilanes. For example, disiloxane H3Si -O- SiH3 is obtained from monobromosilane SiH3Br. When dichlorodimethylsilane Si(CH3)2Cl2 is hydrolyzed and distilled, cyclic dimethylsiloxane [( CH3 ) 2SiO ] n ( n = 3-9) is distilled out, and linear polydimethylsiloxane HO[( CH3 ) 2SiO ] nH remains. They are important intermediates in the production of organosilicon compounds such as silicone oil, silicone rubber, and silicone resin from halogenosilanes. [RnSiO(4-n)/2]m(Rはアルキル、アリール基)型の重合体はシリコーンとよばれる。
