Swedish author. Born in Stockholm. Known as a prolific writer with a light and witty style, one of his early representative works is the adventure novel "The Pirates of Lake Mälarsee" (1911). His representative work from after World War I, "The Salamanders" (1920), isolates the antisocial behavior and egoism of five brothers involved in black market business during the war, but does not seek to resolve the contradictions of modern society. His plays include "I Was a Thief" (1931). [Tanaka Michio]

スウェーデンの作家。ストックホルムに生まれる。軽妙な文体の健筆家として知られ，初期の代表作に冒険小説《メーラル湖の海賊》(1911)がある。第1次大戦後の代表作《セーラムブ家の人々》(1920)では，戦時中の闇商売をめぐる五人兄弟の非社会的な行動，エゴイズムを摘出してみせたが，それは現社会の矛盾の解決を迫るというものではない。戯曲には《私は泥棒だった》(1931)などがある。【田中三千夫】
