Go player. His first name was Yakichi. He was born in Kurumasakashita, Edo (Taito Ward, Tokyo). He was a first-dan player at age 11, and entered the Honinbo family at age 14. He was called a genius along with Shusaku. He later left the family and formed Hoensha with Nakagawa Kamezaburou, Takahashi Shutoku, and Kobayashi Tetsujirou, becoming its president himself. He had the greatest talent in the country, and his influence surpassed that of the Hoensha. He later succeeded Shuei as the 18th Honinbo. He is the author of "Hoen Shinpo." He also launched the magazine "Igo Shinpo" during his time as president of Hoensha. Even today, he is one of the most highly regarded Go players.
