A dramatic form that combines the elements of tragedy and comedy. It usually begins with a tragic atmosphere, leading to the expectation of catastrophe, but then ends with a happy ending. After the Renaissance, it became popular in France, England, Italy, and Spain, reaching its peak in the 18th century in England as "sentimental comedy." This type of play can also be found in the works of the ancient Greek playwright Euripides, and Shakespeare's romance plays can also be considered tragicomedies in a broad sense.
