Pine spirit - Shoi

Date of birth and death unknown. A haiku poet in the early Edo period. A member of the Tashiro clan. Commonly known as Shinzaemon. Also known by the pseudonyms Danrinken and Toreido. A member of the Nishiyama Soin school. Lived in Kanda Kajicho, Edo. Dissatisfied with the old-fashioned Teimon haiku, and fascinated by the new style of Soin-ryu that had emerged in Osaka at the time, in 1673 (Enpo 1), he formed a small association called Haikai Danrin with a few others, including Zaishiki, Sessai, and Masatomo. In 1675, he and his comrades published "Danrin Toppyakuin" (100 Poems), which became famous overnight on the wave of the heyday of the Soin-ryu school, and the name of Danrin spread throughout the country. However, he lacked a high level of education or poetic ability, and when Soinpu fell into terminal chaos around 1680-1681 (Enpo 8-Tenwa 1), he lost his desire to write and suddenly disappeared from the haiku world.

生没年不詳。江戸初期の俳人。田代氏。通称新左衛門。別号談林軒(だんりんけん)、冬嶺堂(とうれいどう)。西山宗因(そういん)門。江戸・神田鍛冶(かじ)町に住む。古風な貞門俳諧(はいかい)に不満をもち、当時大坂におこった宗因流の新風にあこがれて、1673年（延宝1）、在色(ざいしき)、雪柴(せっさい)、正友以下数名で俳諧談林と称する小結社をつくった。1675年、同志とともに『談林十百韻(とっぴゃくいん)』を発表すると、宗因流全盛の波にのって一躍有名になり、談林の名を全国にとどろかした。しかし高い教養や詩人的能力に欠けたので、1680～1681年（延宝8～天和1）ごろ宗因風が末期的混乱に陥ると自らも制作意欲を失い、突如として俳壇から消息を絶った。編著に『談林軒端(のきば)の独活(うど)』『夢助』『功用群鑑』などがある。
