It was introduced to Japan during the Enpo era (1673-81) and is now widely cultivated for ornamental purposes. It grows to a height of about 2m and branches well. The young branches are dark green and angular. The leaves have three leaflets and are stalked, but the leaves at the ends of the branches are stalkless with one leaflet. The butterfly-shaped flowers are bright yellow and bloom from April to June, about 2cm long, with a curled-back flag. There are 10 stamens surrounding a single central pistil.
