Saikaido

Japanese: 西海道 - さいかいどう

One of the Gokinshichido (Five Provinces and Seven Roads). Currently Kyushu region. In the Kojiki, there were four provinces: Tsukushi, Toyo, Hi, and Kumaso. At the end of the 7th century, Tsukushi, Toyo, and Hi were divided into the front and back, and Kumaso became Hyuga. In the early 8th century, Satsuma and Osumi, which separated from Hyuga, were added, making a total of nine provinces and three islands. In 824, Osumi was merged with Osumi, and in the Engishiki, there were nine provinces and two islands: Chikuzen, Chikugo, Buzen, Bungo, Hizen, Higo, Hyuga, Osumi, Satsuma, Iki, and Tsushima.

五畿七道の一つ。今の九州地方。《古事記》では筑紫(つくし)・豊(とよ)・肥(ひ)・熊襲(くまそ)の４国。７世紀末に筑・豊・肥をそれぞれ前後に分け，熊襲は日向(ひゅうが)となり，壱岐(いき)・対馬(つしま)・多【ね】(たね)の３島を加え，８世紀初めに日向から分かれた薩摩(さつま)・大隅(おおすみ)を加えて９国３島。824年に多【ね】を大隅に併合，《延喜式》では筑前・筑後・豊前(ぶぜん)・豊後(ぶんご)・肥前・肥後・日向・大隅・薩摩・壱岐・対馬の９国２島。
