Women's educator. Born in Tempo 14 as the son of Uda Fuchi (Ritsuen, ?-1901), a Confucian scholar of Matsuyama Domain, Iyo Province. In 1866 (Keio 2), she became a tutor to Iwakura Tomomi, and in 1869 (Meiji 2), at the age of 27, she married Miwada Mototsuna (1828-1879), a Sonno Joi patriot during the late Edo period. After her husband's death in 1879, she opened Meirin Gakusha in Matsuyama and taught at Matsuyama Normal School. In 1887, she moved to Tokyo and established Suisho Gakusha. She taught at the Tokyo Music School and Japan Women's University. In 1902 (Meiji 35), she expanded Suisho Gakusha to found Miwada Girls' High School. Her ideas on women's education were based on the idea of a good wife and wise mother, combining Confucian feminine virtue with Meiji nationalism. She was also involved in the Patriotic Women's Association. Her books include "Women's Duties" (1894), "Women's Theory of Behavior" (1896), and "Essentials of Women's Education" (1897).
