A medium-sized bear with a large white marking around the eye that lives in the high altitudes of the Andes (illustration). A mammal of the Ursidae family in the carnivora order. The body color is black or dark brown, and the fur is of medium length. The white marking around the eye extends from the cheek to the throat and chest depending on the individual. Body length is 120-180 cm, shoulder height is 70-80 cm, tail length is about 7 cm, and weight is 130 kg for males, sometimes reaching 175 kg. Females are about 60 kg. They mostly live in moist forests at altitudes of 1900-2350 m in the Andes from Venezuela to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, but can also be found near the coast and in alpine grasslands when water is available. アンデスの高所にすむ,目の周囲を取り囲む大きな白紋をもつ中型のクマ(イラスト)。食肉目クマ科の哺乳類。体色は黒色ないし黒褐色で,毛の長さは中くらい。目の周囲の白紋は個体によってほおからのど,胸にまで広がる。体長120~180cm,肩高70~80cm,尾長7cm前後,体重は雄で130kg,ときに175kgに達する。雌では60kg程度。ベネズエラから,コロンビア,エクアドル,ペルー,ボリビアにかけてのアンデス山脈の標高1900~2350mの湿った森林に多くすむが,水場が利用できる場合には海岸近くから高山草原にまで見られる。
