Taimadera Temple

Japanese: 当麻寺 - たいまでら

It is located in Taima-cho, Kitakatsuragi-gun, Nara Prefecture (now Katsuragi City). This temple is dedicated to both the Koyasan Shingon and Jodo sects. It is said that Prince Maroko founded Manpozo-in in Kawachi Province in 612, and later moved it to its current location and renamed Taima-dera, but the layout of the temple buildings suggests that it was founded in the Nara period. Since the Kamakura period, it has flourished as a sacred place of Pure Land Buddhism centered on the Taima Mandala, and is also known for the legend of Princess Chujohime. A Nerikuyo ceremony is held on May 14th, which recreates the scene of the coming of the deity. In addition to the main hall, east pagoda, and west pagoda, which are all national treasures, the temple is home to many important cultural properties.

奈良県北葛城郡当麻町（現・葛城市）にある。高野山真言宗・浄土宗の二宗兼帯の寺。612年麻呂子皇子が河内国に万法蔵院を創立，のち現在地に移して当麻寺と改称したと伝えるが，伽藍(がらん)配置の形式から奈良時代の創立とされている。鎌倉時代から当麻曼荼羅(まんだら)を中心とする浄土信仰の霊場として栄え，中将姫伝説でも知られる。また来迎のさまを再現する練供養(ねりくよう)が５月14日に行われる。国宝の本堂・東塔・西塔のほかに多くの重要文化財がある。
