Limón (English spelling)

Japanese: リモン(英語表記)Limón
Limón (English spelling)
Also known as Puerto Limón. A city in eastern Costa Rica. Capital of the province of the same name. It is the country's main port on the Caribbean Sea, about 120 km east of the capital, San José. It was built near an Indian settlement where Columbus is said to have landed during his final voyage. During the colonial period, it was used by Spanish merchants and smugglers, and was often attacked by pirates and the Moskito (Miskito) Indian tribe. It developed rapidly after becoming a foreign trade port around 1867. In 1890, a railway was opened between the city and the capital, and it became a shipping port for bananas, coffee, and other large plantations. The banana plantations in the hinterland temporarily declined due to the outbreak of Panama disease in the 1930s, but production increased again after new varieties resistant to the disease were introduced. There is an airport. Population 50,939 (estimated 1991).
