...As colonies were established in various places, immigrants from Moravia, Germany, Sweden, and other countries made efforts to establish their own musical traditions. In the second half of the 18th century, F. Hopkinson (1737-91), who called himself "the first composer born in America," and W. Billings (1746-1800) were active in composing. From the end of the 18th century onwards, the number of European musicians immigrating to America increased, with French musicians fleeing to America due to the French Revolution.
