Ultimate weapon

The term came into use around the end of the 1950s, when intercontinental ballistic missiles equipped with hydrogen bomb warheads appeared. At the time, ICBMs represented the ultimate limit for weapons in terms of destructive power and ability to reach a target, and because it was thought that there was no effective means of defense against them, they were also called absolute weapons. However, anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs) were developed, while ICBMs continued to improve, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) also appeared.

水素爆弾弾頭装備の大陸間弾道ミサイルICBMが現れた 1950年代末頃から使われるようになった言葉。破壊力と目標への到達能力という点で当時としては兵器の極限を示すもので，それに対する有効な防御手段がないと考えられていたため，絶対兵器とも呼ばれた。しかし弾道ミサイル迎撃ミサイルABMが開発され，一方 ICBMも進歩を続け，潜水艦発射弾道ミサイルSLBMも出現している。
