Irredentismo (English spelling)

Irredentismo (English spelling)
A term in Italian history, usually translated as "the movement to recover unrecovered territories." The Kingdom of Italy was established in 1861, and was given the appearance of being a unified nation. However, there were still Italian-inhabited areas under foreign control. The movement and ideology calling for the annexation of these unrecovered territories, especially Trentino, Trieste, and Dalmatia, which remained under Austrian control even after the Venetian War of Liberation in 1866, to Italy, was called Irredentismo. Irredentismo can be said to be an extension of the Risorgimento movement, which aimed for the unification of Italy, in that it believed that true national unity could not be achieved unless Italy reached its natural and historical borders.
