Carl Wernicke

German psychoneurologist. Graduated from the University of Breslau, he became a professor of psychiatry at the same university in 1885 and a professor at the University of Halle in 1904, but died in a bicycle accident in 1905. He was an organic theorist who believed that mental illness was a brain disease, and was a student of T. Meynert, who followed in the footsteps of W. Griesinger, and C. Westphal. He studied psychoneurological disorders using the theory of the mental reflex arc (sensation → inner psyche → movement), and placed emphasis on the localization of brain lesions. He created a classification scheme for aphasia (the Wernicke-Lichtheim scheme) and determined the lesion site of sensory aphasia (left temporal lobe, Wernicke's center).

ドイツの精神神経病学者。ブレスラウ大学卒，1885年同大学精神神経科教授，1904年ハレ大学教授となったが，05年自転車事故で死亡した。精神病は脳病であるという立場の器質論者であり，W.グリージンガーの流れをくむマイネルトT.MeynertとウェストファルC.Westphalの弟子。精神神経疾患について精神反射弓の理論(感覚→精神内界→運動)を用いて研究し，脳病変の局在学を重視した。失語症の分類図式(ウェルニッケ=リヒトハイムの図式)を作り，感覚失語の病巣(左側頭葉，ウェルニッケ中枢)を決定した。
