1848‐1905 German psychoneurologist. Graduated from the University of Breslau, he became a professor of psychiatry at the same university in 1885 and a professor at the University of Halle in 1904, but died in a bicycle accident in 1905. He was an organic theorist who believed that mental illness was a brain disease, and was a student of T. Meynert, who followed in the footsteps of W. Griesinger, and C. Westphal. He studied psychoneurological disorders using the theory of the mental reflex arc (sensation → inner psyche → movement), and placed emphasis on the localization of brain lesions. He created a classification scheme for aphasia (the Wernicke-Lichtheim scheme) and determined the lesion site of sensory aphasia (left temporal lobe, Wernicke's center).
