Yoyo - Yoyo (English spelling) yoyo

A toy that applies the principle of a gyroscope. It was invented in China and brought to Europe from the East Indies in the 18th century. At the time, it was called Prince of Wales in England and Yo-Yo de Normandie in France. It became popular worldwide in the early Showa period under the name "yo-yo". It is also called climbing top. It was brought to Japan in 1932 (Showa 7) and became a big hit the following year. Even now, wooden carved crafts can be found in the Tohoku region, Gunma, Kanagawa, and Mie prefectures, as well as plastic ones with luminous paint and small tin toys. Something similar to this has been around in Japan since the mid-Edo period, and was called "handcart". At the time, they were also introduced from China, and first became popular in Nagasaki, with clay ones being made in Kyoto and Osaka. The "Modern Eccentrics" (written by Ban Kokei) published in 1798 (Kansei 10) records that handcarts were sold in Kyoto in the early Kyoho era (1716-1736). They became a popular toy under the name "Ochodono Handcart." Other examples included the "Zeniguruma" and "Amano Tsurigoma." These were the same as yo-yos, just made from different materials.
