Japanese:
Egret Flower - Egret Flower

A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). It produces bulbs underground that survive the winter and sprout in spring. It has thin leaves, 5-7 of which grow alternately around the stem. In July and August, the flower stalk grows to 20-30 cm, and produces 2-3 flowers, each about 3 cm in diameter. The three sepals are small and green, but the three petals are conspicuous white. The lip petal is particularly large, with finely lobed edges and a long spur at the back. The flower shape resembles a heron taking flight, hence the name egret flower. It grows among the grass in sunny marshes, and can also grow in clusters. It is found in the southern Tohoku region, Kyushu, Taiwan, and eastern China.

As a horticultural variety, it is cultivated with leaves that have white or yellow margins. It is planted in a shallow flowerpot, and every year before it germinates, it is repotted in high-quality sphagnum moss, placed on a shelf, and given full sun. Water it in the morning and evening, and it is good to give it a thin liquid fertilizer occasionally.
