Born March 6, 1824 in Waterbreath, New York
[Died] June 21, 1893. Palo Alto, California. American businessman and politician. One of the builders of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. He practiced law in Wisconsin from 1848 to 1852, then moved to Sacramento, California, where he successfully ran a retail business selling mining supplies and general merchandise. He also entered local politics as a Republican, and served as Governor of California from 1861 to 1863. He participated in the transcontinental railroad construction project, and was president of the Central Pacific Railroad Company from 1861 to 1893. He played a key role in the development of railroad networks in California and the Southwest. He served as a U.S. Senator from 1885 to 1893. In 1885, he founded Leland Stanford Junior College (commonly known as Stanford University) in memory of his only son, who died at the age of 15.

A town in the South Kesteven district in the southwest of Lincolnshire, eastern England, United Kingdom. It is located about 65 km south of the county capital Lincoln, on the western edge of the lowlands known as the Fen country, facing the River Welland. It lies along the Great North Road, a major transport route that runs north from London, and has long developed as a market town. Industries include agricultural machinery, bricks, tiles, and toys. Old churches including St. Mary's Cathedral and the ruins of a 7th century monastery are preserved. Population: 19,525 (2001).

A city in the state of Connecticut in the United States. It is 56 km northeast of New York City, facing the Long Island Sound. Settled by Separatists in 1641, it is now a commercial and industrial center with well-developed port facilities, and is home to the headquarters of Xerox, a copying machine manufacturer, and manufactures chemical products and ball bearings. In recent years, the population has been growing rapidly as a residential city near New York. There is a branch campus of the University of Connecticut. Population: 122,643 (2010).
