A short story by Oda Sakunosuke. It was first published in Umikaze in April 1940 (Showa 15). It was republished in Bungei in July as Kaizosha's first recommended work for literature. It was included in the anthology of the same name published by Sogensha in August. Koreyasu Yanagiyoshi, the young boss of a cosmetics wholesaler with a wife and children, elopes with a geisha named Choko, starts a family, and moves from one business to another, such as a razor shop and a Kanto stew shop. Yanagiyoshi tends to be weak-willed, but his strong-willed wife supports him with the vitality typical of Osaka people, and he gets through his problems with a cheerfulness and vitality. It is famous for the portrayal of a tenacious wife. It is said that the story is largely based on the author, Tsuneyama Ichiyo, and her husband, Katsuji. The author commented that the work is "like a nostalgia for my soul." In 1955 (Showa 30), a film version was made, directed by Toyoda Shiro and starring Morishige Hisaya and Awashima Chikage (1924-2012), which was well received. It has also been adapted into many stage plays.

Japanese film. Directed by Toyoda Shiro in 1955 (Showa 30). Based on the original story by Oda Sakunosuke. Ryukichi (Morishige Hisaya), the heir to a merchant family in Osaka, is deeply in love with a geisha, Choko (Awashima Chikage), despite being married to a child. The self-indulgent Ryukichi's family business is taken over by his sister's husband. With no home to return to, Ryukichi decides to live with Choko. This is a representative work by Toyoda, who has worked on many literary films. Morishige plays a selfish, spoiled man who is careless with money, while Awashima plays a woman who loves and devotes herself to such a man. The dialogue between the two is one of the highlights, and the conversation at the end in the snowy Hozenji Yokocho is a memorable scene. This film is also excellent as a film in the Kansai dialect, and this is because Toyoda, Morishige, and the screenwriter Yasumi Toshio (1903-1991) are all from the Kansai region.

織田作之助の短編小説。1940年（昭和15）4月『海風』に発表。改造社第1回文芸推薦作品として7月の『文芸』に再掲。8月、創元社刊の同名の創作集に収録。妻子ある化粧品卸問屋の若旦那(だんな)維康(これやす)柳吉が、芸者の蝶子(ちょうこ)とかけおちして所帯をもち、剃刀(かみそり)屋、関東煮(かんとだき)屋など商売を転々とする。とかく意志の弱い柳吉を、しっかり者の女房が大阪人特有の生活力で支え、明るくバイタリティをもって切り抜けていく物語。粘り強い女房の姿がよく描かれていることで有名。大体のモデルは作者の次姉山市千代とその夫乕次であるといわれる。作者は「私の魂の郷愁のやうな作品」と感想を述べている。1955年（昭和30）豊田四郎監督、森繁久弥(ひさや)、淡島千景(あわしまちかげ)（1924―2012）主演で映画化され好評を博した。舞台化も多い。

日本映画。1955年（昭和30）、豊田四郎監督。原作は織田作之助。大阪の商家の跡取りの柳吉（森繁久弥）は、妻子をもちながら芸者の蝶子（淡島千景）と深い仲にある。自堕落な柳吉は家業を妹婿に乗っ取られる。戻る家を失った柳吉は、蝶子と生きていくことを決める。文芸映画を数多く手掛けた豊田の代表作。金にだらしなく、わがままで甘えん坊な男を森繁が、そんな男を愛して尽くす女を淡島がそれぞれ好演。二人の掛け合いは見所の一つであり、ラストの雪の法善寺横町での会話は名場面。また、本作は関西弁の映画としても優れたものであるが、その原因として豊田、森繁、そして脚本の八住利雄(やすみとしお)（1903―1991）が関西出身であることがあげられる。
