…He became an apprentice to master carpenter Shimizu Kisuke (1783-1859), married into the Shimizu family in 1839 (Tenpo 10), and became the second head of the family in 1859 (Ansei 6). With the help of Ii Naosuke, who had been a regular customer since the first head of the family, he expanded into Yokohama and built the Foreign Magistrate's Office and the Foreigners' Prison, while absorbing Western architectural styles. After the Meiji Restoration, he designed the Mitsui House (1872) and the Exchange Bank Mitsui (1872), which were masterpieces of an eclectic style known as pseudo-Western architecture. He is the ancestor of the current Shimizu Corporation. …

… From the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period, the foreign-style houses built in the foreign settlements, including Nagasaki, were all in the colonial style with verandas. While the pillars and arches were classical, the veranda ceilings were made of woven thin boards curved into a vault in the Southeast Asian style. In the so-called pseudo-Western architecture by Japanese craftsmen, verandas of this kind were particularly popular, and until around the 1880s, they were considered a symbol of Western-style architecture.
