Willow tussock moth (Leucoma salicis)

Japanese: ヤナギドクガ(柳毒蛾) - ヤナギドクガ（英語表記）Leucoma salicis

An insect of the family Lymantriidae in the order Lepidoptera. Wing span is 4-5.5cm. Both the body and wings are white and unmarked. The antennae are comb-like, with shorter teeth in females. The antennae have white stalks but black teeth. It is found in the central mountainous areas of Hokkaido and Honshu, and is widely distributed in northern Eurasia outside of Japan. In parts of North America, it has been introduced from Europe and is native to the area. The dorsal surface of the larva has a yellowish-white band on a black background. It feeds on the leaves of the Salicaceae family, including poplar, poplar tree, and mountain willow. It emerges once a year, with adults appearing in July and August.

鱗翅目ドクガ科の昆虫。翅の開張4～5.5cm。体翅とも白色で無紋。触角は櫛歯（くしば）状，雌では櫛歯が短い。触角の柄は白色だが，櫛歯は黒い。北海道と本州の中部山地に産し，国外ではユーラシア大陸の北部に広く分布し，北アメリカの一部でヨーロッパから侵入したものが土着している。幼虫の背面には黒地に黄白色帯がある。ポプラ，ドロノキ，ミネヤナギなどヤナギ科の葉を食べる。年1回の発生で，成虫は7～8月に出現する。
