A public office in which one is engaged without receiving a salary or remuneration, but is free to have another main occupation. It is the concept of a salaried position, but one can receive compensation for actual expenses and remuneration for work. Under the city and town/village system under the Meiji Constitution, many positions such as town/village mayor and deputy town/village mayor were considered honorary positions. Under the Constitution of Japan, these were abolished and became salaried positions, and certain positions were prohibited.
