On Ebisuko Day, the 20th day of the 10th month of the lunar calendar, merchants and prostitutes in Kyoto visit the Kanshaden in Shijo-Kyogoku to pray for cleansing the sins of deceiving customers in business negotiations and to avoid divine punishment. This custom dates back to the Edo period, when stores in Kyoto and Osaka held sales on this day, and later became a sales event for stores, spreading not only to Kyoto and Osaka but throughout the country. Currently, the period has been extended to about a week, and the timing varies depending on the region.
