Tojuro's Love - Tojuro's Love

A play by Kikuchi Kan. It has one act and three scenes. It was first published as a novel in the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun in April 1919 (Taisho 8). In October of the same year, it was adapted by Omori Chisetsu and performed for the first time at the Naniwaza Theater in Osaka by Nakamura Ganjiro I and others. The author also wrote the play separately and included it in his collection of plays, Tojuro's Love, published in April 1920. Sakata Tojuro, a famous wagoto actor at the Miyako Mandayu Theater in Kyoto, is unable to come up with an idea for the role of a secret husband and falls in love with Okaji, the wife of a teahouse owner. Tojuro's performance is highly praised, but when Okaji finds out that the love is false, she commits suicide. Based on an anecdote about Tojuro from the Kengaishu collection in the Actor's Analects (1776), the play focuses on the ruthlessness of the great actor's art. It is often performed as part of the new kabuki repertoire, and has been made into a film twice, in 1938 (Showa 13) and 1980, starring Hasegawa Kazuo.

菊池寛(かん)の戯曲。一幕三場。1919年（大正8）4月、小説として『大阪毎日新聞』に発表。同年10月、大森痴雪(ちせつ)脚色により初世中村鴈治郎(がんじろう)らが大阪・浪花(なにわ)座で初演したが、これとは別に作者自身が戯曲として書き、20年4月刊行の戯曲集『藤十郎の恋』に収めた。京都・都万太夫(みやこまんだゆう)座の和事(わごと)の名優坂田藤十郎は、密夫(みそかお)の役のくふうがつかず、芝居茶屋の女房お梶(かじ)に恋をしかける。藤十郎の芸は絶賛されるが、偽りの恋と知ったお梶は自害する。『役者論語(ばなし)』（1776）に収められている『賢外(けんがい)集』の藤十郎の逸話に拠(よ)りながら、名優の芸の非情さに焦点をあてた。新歌舞伎(かぶき)のレパートリーとしてよく上演されるほか、長谷川一夫(はせがわかずお)主演で1938年（昭和13）と55年の2回映画化されている。
