Also written as Shikishi or Tamegiku. In the Edo period, the shogunate provided clothing according to the season to various officials, such as doho, uhitsu, shochoyaku, and sukiyabozu, or the clothing provided by them. In some cases, some of the clothing was given as payment. Merchants and farmers also provided livery to their servants. In Edo period merchants, apprentices and young priests were hired at the age of 12 or 13, but for about 10 years after that, until they came of age and became clerks, they were not given a salary, but only livery, food, and a small allowance. 四季施,為着とも書く。江戸時代,幕府が諸役人,例えば同朋,右筆,賄調役,数寄屋坊主などへ時候に応じて衣服を与えたこと,もしくは与えた衣服をいう。一部が代金で与えられる場合もあった。また商家や農家でも奉公人に仕着が与えられた。江戸時代の商家では,丁稚(でつち),小僧は12,13歳で雇い入れられたが,その後約10年間,元服して手代となるまでは給金は与えられず,仕着と食事および若干のこづかいが与えられるだけであった。
